Scientific Study – Peppermint Oil Promotes Hair Growth without Toxic Signs

In 2014, researches in Korea investigated the effect peppermint oil has on hair growth compared to the FDA approved minoxidil. The results were impressive.

The test subjects were randomized into 4 groups based on different topical applications listed below which was applied 6 days per week for 4 weeks:

  1. a) Peppermint oil (PEO)
  2. b) Minoxidil (MXD)
  3. c) Saline
  4. d) Jojoba oil

Quoting the scientific study (link below), the results revealed that of the “of the 4 experimental groups, PEO group showed the most prominent hair growth effects; a significant increase in dermal thickness, follicle number, and follicle depth” The results also suggested “that PEO induces a rapid anagen stage and could be used for a practical agent for hair growth”

Photographs and other methods of monitoring took place and revealed that the “PEO and MXD induced very thick and long hair growth and promoted elongation of hair follicles from dermis to subcutis“. This indicated that the hair follicles were in growth phase (anagen stage). “In conclusion, our experimental data suggest that 3% PEO facilitates hair growth by promoting the conservation of vascularization of hair dermal papilla, which may contribute to the induction of early anagen stage”
