There has been many people including myself who have noticed that new lipomas have formed or existing ones grew larger while exercising, and this may be due to the production of free radicals within our bodies.
Oxidative Stress & Free Radicals:
Exercising can create oxidative stress within our bodies which causes free radicals (atoms or groups of atoms with an odd/ unpaired number of electrons).
Oxidative stress occurs when oxygen interacts with our bodies molecules and causes them to form reactive free radicals.
These free radicals (unpaired atoms) can multiply by releasing an electron and forming a second radical, this process continues (aka oxidation chain) until it is broken or neutralised. if free radicals react with important cellular components such as DNA or cell membrane it will result in the cells performing poorly or even dyeing.
Our bodies use antioxidants to break the chain and control the free radicals in our bodies.
If the free radicals overwhelm your antioxidant defence system the damage is called oxidative stress.
Our bodies use antioxidants (our antioxidant system) to repair these free radicals.
Antioxidants are molecules which can safely interact with free radicals and terminate the chain reaction before vital molecules are damaged
The two main kinds of antioxidants are endogenous (produced inside your body) and exogenous (consumed from diet and other sources).
The main exogenous antioxidants are:
- Vitamin E
- Beta – carotene
- Vitamin C
Regular Exercise vs “Weekend Warrior”:
Exercise increases the oxygen utilization from 10 to 20 times over the resting state which increases the generation of free radicals in our bodies.
Regular exercise can enhance your bodies antioxidant defence system and protect against exercise induced free radicals, in other words your body adapts to the exercise.
However if you are completely sedentary from Monday to Friday (i.e. desk job and no exercise) until the weekend, it does not give your body the time to build up its defences and will result in higher levels of free radicals.
Its is important to exercise regularly and if you going to do an intense workout, it might be a good idea to work to that level of intensity over a period of time instead of right away, this is give your body the ability to adapt.
It may be beneficial to take a vitamin E supplement to boost our antioxidants to protect ourselves from induced oxidative damage after exercising.
There is a bit of support online about this theory but keep in mind it just a theory.
I will be taking vitamin E after every workout just to be safe:
Lipomas and their connection to free radicals:
Lipomas are growths of fat cells made up of adipose tissue that can be found just below the skin.
Lipomas are non-cancerous tumours and potentially occurs when our cells do not divide correctly, cell division is a strictly controlled process in the body, with new cells being created to replace old and damaged cells. When this process is disrupted, a lipoma may develop.
We know that increased exercise can increase free radicals within our bodies:
- Increased exercise (weekend warrior) – without regular exercise to build our bodies natural antioxidant defences and without an effective nutrient diet with high antioxidants will result free radicals
- Free radicals occurs when oxygen in the body splits into single atoms with unpaired electrons. Electrons like to be in pairs, so these atoms, called free radicals, scavenge the body to seek out other electrons so they can become a pair. This causes damage to cells, proteins and DNA. Free radicals are associated with human disease.
- Free radicals can also occur with the food we eat, medicine we take, and water we drink.
I personally believe there is a strong connection with free radicals within my body which has overwhelmed my antioxidant system (because I am not consuming high antioxidant foods) and the formation of lipomas in my body.
I have decided to boost my antioxidants in my body by take a shot of turmeric every day.
This spice that comes from the turmeric plant is arguable one of the most powerful herbs on the planet at fighting and potentially reversing diseases. It has an incredibly long list of healing properties but the one I am concerned about it the reduction of free radicals in my body.
