Lipomas and Candida Albican (CA) Overgrowth

I have a strong view that lipomas are caused by a variety of factors, one of which may relate to CA overgrowth in our gut. CA overgrowth not only weakens our immune system but puts significant strain on our already weak immune system due to leaky gut.

Leaky gut allows for toxins, food particles and other foreign substances to leak from our gut into our blood stream, putting pressure on our immune system to fight and fix the problem.

In addition, having a bacterial imbalance in our gut causes digestion issues and also results in further fungal infections across our body.

These factors in my opinion could very well be the reason our bodies form lipomas, our immune system has been weakened and its best defense may be to encapsulate the toxins and foreign substances that have leaked from our bodies instead of destroying or flushing them out another way.

CA overgrowth

CA overgrowth is a fungus (or a form of yeast) which is a normal part of our gut flora (a group of microorganisms that live within our digestive tract).

Majority of people have some level of CA in their intestines or gut and it usually coexists with other bacteria and yeast that live there. However there are a variety of factors that can result in a population over growth of the fungus as it starts to establish fast growing colonies and biofilms which start to dominate our gut. An overgrowth can result in a leaky gut where toxins and other foreign substances leak out into our bloodstream. An overgrowth of this fungus can cause significant issues to our immune system and variety of others within our body as the negative effects flow around our circulatory system.

CA overgrowth can result in the following (just to mention a few!)

  • Digestions issues (with a lack of good bacteria in our systems, bad bacteria thrives and grow which cause digestive issues such as diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, cramps, nausea)
  • Fungal infections on skin and nails
  • Damage to our intestinal walls which allows toxic by-products to leak into our blood stream and spread throughout our body (also known as leaky gut syndrome)
  • Weakening of the immune system due to an imbalance of microorganisms in the gut (intestines are one the most significant parts supporting of our immune system)
  • Further weakening of the immune system due to pressure placed on it by constantly fighting off toxins and other foreign substances caused leaky gut syndrome
  • Brain fog, confusion, difficulties with memory and concentration due to too much acetaldehyde (one of the toxic metabolites produced by CA overgrowth) in our blood stream for our liver to process, this allows it to circulate to our nervous system and brain.

CA overgrowth can be caused by a variety of different factors, a few of the main ones of interest to me are listed below:

This is one of the biggest causes of CA overgrowth as it kills off most of the bacteria within our gut, the good and bad. However CA fungus is resistant to antibiotics, and with the good bacteria killed off in our gut, it gives the fungus opportunity to flourish and grow.

It is always recommended to take probiotics to re-populate our gut with good bacteria (be mindful to not take it at the same time as the antibiotic otherwise the good bacteria will be killed off, if you taking antibiotics in the morning, take our probiotic in the evening.)

Another method to replenish the good bacteria is to eat fermented foods that contain beneficial bacteria i.e. sauerkraut and fermented milk.

High sugar and carbohydrates

CA feeds off glucose, fructose and sucrose to grow and build their cell walls (80% of the cell walls roughly consist of carbohydrates). It also uses sugar to construct the biofilms that protect it from our immune system.

Eating a low carbohydrate and sugar diet will give you the best chance of reducing or even reversing our CA.

High levels of stress

When we are under stress our bodies release a cortisol, a hormone that depresses our immune system and raises our blood sugar level. Our immune system fights off CAs but under too much stress the cortisol will depress our immune system making it powerless against the fungus, and the raised sugar levels will feed the fungus as mentioned above.

Weak immune system

A healthy immune system should be able to fight off CA overgrowth, but there is a variety of factors that can weaken our immune system making it harder to fight off the fungus as it grows in population.

Leaky gut:

CA overgrowth can lead to a leaky gut syndrome which is inflammation and weakening of the intestinal walls causing openings in the wall to develop. The holes developing in our gut is caused by a serious stage of CA infection as the candida yeast grows roots (hypha) which is like a long hanging branch. The branches invade the cells in our intestinal lining causing inflammation and holes which allows for toxins and food particles to spill out from our gut and into our bloodstream.

This puts pressure on our immune system which gets activated to fight off these toxins, food particles and other foreign substances.

On an interesting note, many of our food allergies are directly related to leaky gut, as our immune system gets triggered to fight off against food particulars which has entered into our blood stream, our immune system remembers these foods we have eaten and treats them as foreign invaders. When we consume these foods again in the future, regardless if it has leaked into our bloodstream or not, our bodies will start to reject the food immediately.

How to treat CA overgrowth

Your diet is probably the most important component in the treatment plan. By eliminating sugar and high levels of carbohydrates in your diet you could take away the food source required for the fungus to grow and survive.

A great website that provides a detailed list of foods you should avoid (

A brief list of some of the foods to avoid is here:

  • Foods high in sugar and carbohydrates
  • Alcohol
  • Tuna and swordfish
  • Pork
  • Vegetable oils
  • Caffeine

Our bodies need to have a good balance between good and bad bacteria, accomplishing this supports both our digestive systems and our immune system. There are a variety of reasons why our bodies can be overcome by CA (bad fungus/bacteria) i.e. a course of antibiotics. An effective way of bringing back some balance in our gut is by taking probiotics to reintroduce the good bacteria into our system.

Natural Anti fungal

There is quite a few natural foods that contain anti-fungal compounds which can be found on the website, my favourites are listed below:

  • Coconut oil as it contains high levels of caprylic acid, capric acid, and lauric acid, all of which have been proven effective when treating CA overgrowth. In particular caprylic acid which is now a proven anti fungal treatment as it penetrates the cell walls of the candida yeast causing it break.
  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Oregano Oil
  • Turmeric

Prescription Anti fungal

There is also prescription medication that can be taken orally to help kill off CA overgrowth, the two most common ones is Diflucan (Flucconazole) and Nystatin. Both of which come with a long list of side effects so its important to do your research and consult with a doctor about all pros and cons.

My name is CK and I currently have 1,000’s of lipomas across my body. I have had 6 lipomas surgically removed for cosmetic reasons. The lipomas started appearing in my early twenties with no family history of lipomas, my lifestyle is active and fairly healthy however there is always room for improvement.
